M.A.D.E. TNT'S Elderly Home Visit

Sometimes the simplest gift we can give is our time, and at Mercy Home, that gift turned into laughter, stories, and even more.

This past Saturday, four of M.A.D.E.'s volunteers had the wonderful opportunity to spend the morning at Mercy Home, where they were able to converse with some of the residents there. The project went smoothly, and the experience was nothing short of amazing.

During their visit, they got to speak with Vida, Bridget, Erma, and Jackie. Vida, a 60 year old woman, who the volunteers spent nearly two hours in conversation with, opened up about her life, feelings and her family, showing them cherished photos. She spoke with wisdom, offering heartfelt advice about surrounding ourselves with good company, trusting in the Lord, and remaining faithful. Before everyone left, she wished us great success in our lives, hoping for us to come again.

Volunteers also had the chance to speak with the dedicated staff of the

home, who takes care of the elderly. Their welcoming aura was immediately felt through the compassion and professionalism that made Mercy Home feel warm and safe, not just for the residents, but also for visitors like us. This allowed us to see how seriously they consider their profession and the responsibilities associated with it.

For many of the elderly residents, the impact of the visit was deeply felt. They expressed their gratitude, some stating that the visit lifted their spirits, while mentioning a desire for us to return, especially around Christmas. It was requested, for the future visit, that these items are offered:

  1. Ginger beer

  2. A word search book

  3. A colouring book and coloured pencils

  4. Pastels and ham as a small snack

Toni, one of our volunteers, described her experience beautifully:

"My experience with the women from Mercy Home was actually a very much enjoyed one. I loved getting to know the patients and their stories. I felt like I knew them my entire life and time passed so fast while talking to them. I made a best friend and her name is Erma and she is 92 years old…I would definitely be going back to visit because I loved interacting with them."

This visit reminded us of the importance of connection, companionship, and community. We are already looking forward to hopefully returning during the holiday season to bring joy, comfort, and thoughtful gifts to the residents of Mercy Home.
